Shariff_003.jpg

1) Sticking my finger up Sharif’s nose while wrestling in the bushes in front of the dorms. He has a bite mark on his chest but I take no responsibility for this as it has been obliterated from my memory by narcotics that shall remain nameless.

2) Climbing a tree to talk to a perspective college student on the second floor of the adjacent dormitories. No, I was not successful and yes, this is a felony as she is a senior in high school

3) Last but not least . . . spraying Josh Chambers in the face with a fire extinguisher. Admittedly there are thinly veiled homoerotic undertones to blowing my load on the visage my fellow Skidrow Alumnus. In point of fact, the gesture actually came (a-hem) out of jealousy as Mr. Chambers convinced the young lady from crime #2 to open the door and talk to us. She, unfortunately couldn’t come out to play as she was in her PJs and had just put in her retainer . . .

. . . sigh . . .

Esther Robinson of Creative Capital and theater artist/administrator Aaron Landsman have started a new organization called Art Home whose "mission is to help artists and their communities build assets and equity through financial literacy and home-ownership. "

It looks like it could be really great - check out the site at http://www.arthomeonline.org/ and see what they're up to.

Hey All Y'all -

Sorry not to be writing more. Things around culturebot central have been really busy. Among other things, Culturebot has been programming the P.S.122 Summer Season at Spiegeltent and it has been NUTS!

For those of you who don't know, The Spiegel Tent is "The World's Most Beautiful Traveling Venue" and it is a ton o' fun. Culturebot went to the Tent last summer in Edinburgh and had many a rousing and raucous evening of entertainment and libation.

I'm really excited about the Performance Space 122 Summer Season at Spiegel Tent - it is a bunch of Mondays, so it is for the real hardcore arts and entertainment crowd (i.e.: new yorkers). You can keep the weekend going just a little bit longer, enjoy some beer in the beer garden and see some awesome shows.

The final line-ups of some of the events are still being finalized, but here's the basic overview:

August 7th at 8PMOne Ring Zero, featuring writers Ned Vizzini, Mike Daisey & Clay McLeod Chapman (more writers TBC) as well as a special preview screening of the One Ring Zero documentary “As Smart As They Are

August 14th at 10PMChicks & Giggles – fierce alternative all-women comedy variety show (line-up TBC)brought to you by Nichelle Stephens and Carolyn Castiglia. (Two of my favorite comedic blog-pals and both previous performers at The WYSIWYG Talent Show!)

August 21st at 8PM – An evening of Tango and Milonga with Leonardo Suarez Paz and Cuartetango String Quartet to benefit P.S.122's Buenos Aires in Translation Project. (this one's going to be hot!)

August 28th at 10PMJohn Moran’s new music/installation performance Zenith 5.

"One of the most important (and underrated) figures in the avantgarde." - TimeOut NY

"Like so many modern choreographers - Merce Cunningham, Twyla Tharp, Mark Morris - he is far and away his own best performer... engaging, sexy and scary." - The New York Times

'ZENITH 5' is Composed/Directed by John Moran.  Featuring Katherine Brook, Joseph Keckler, and an ensemble-cast of animatronic figures.  The audience is invited to enter and re-enter at will, into this constantly evolving work of environmental music/theater.  Sit back, chat with friends, have a drink, and contemplate Moran's first feature length work since returning from Paris.

P.S.122 Summer Season at Spiegeltent is going to be great and I hope you will join us for one or all of these fantastic evenings!!

"Word of mouth has always been the ideal. But the Internet has provided a new and, some say, vastly improved set of tools to generate it: not just e-mail blasts but also Web sites, banner ads, search-engine pop-ups and blog coverage. In the last few years these tools have reshaped the way the theater reaches its audience."

an article by jesse green in the nytimes talks about how "Producers Use the Web to Romance Audience and Bring Them Back"

Hmph. I mean, really.

My Spanish language skills are about as good as my knowledge of professional sports. I know about five phrases in the world’s second most popular language, three of which involve taco . . . the other two involve your mother. However, this puts me squarely in line with the American Football (Soccer) Diaspora, as the majority of the U.S. doesn’t really know what they are looking at. This INCLUDES the American commentators. So even though Yo No Ablo I still choose Telemundo’s coverage of the games over the idiotic sportscasters on ABC. (There is a ton of fanatical outrage if one wants to Google for it . . . the most impressive being NOTE TO ABC/ESPN EXECS: YOUR WORLD CUP COMMENTATORS BLOW!)

Now I am aware this site is primarily for more artsy-fartsy purposes. In addition, Mr. Roboto is prolly sick of me using CultureSlut to babble on about this and that which is only tangential to 'Performance.' Although if we look at the broader notion of 'Kuhl-cha' there is no greater global common denominator than soccer. Hey, just be thankful I stopped writing about basketball.

Created by Jonathan Zalben

Installation: July 11 to 27, 2006. Tuesdays/Wednesdays/Thursdays from 12-2 P.M. and 6-9 P.M.
Performances: Wednesdays July 12, 19, and 26, from 8:30-9:00 P.M. with reception to follow.

The piece is in two movements, one devoted to each tower that fell. Each movement is based on a piece from Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier. Recordings and transcripts of radio transmissions released by the FDNY on August 12, 2005 are layered into the original music score, consisting of strings and electronics.

perfstill2.jpg
As visitors walk through the space, their movements trigger excerpts of the radio transmissions, while transcripts are read over walkie-talkies by live performers. Video footage using images of the World Trade Center, is also projected in the space and responds to the audio through custom computer software. The colors vary with changes in the sound score, and a person’s movement can also trigger changes in the video, such as cueing new images. In the center of the space are two columns of light which recall the memorial each year at the World Trade Center site. When a person enters the light, their image becomes an outline for an American flag revealed in the video projection. The movement captured in the light also serves as the focal point for triggering audio and video clips to be filtered through the computer. In addition to the installation, live performances incorporating dance, recitations, and an ensemble of flute and strings will take place every Wednesday at 8:30 P.M.

All events are free and open to the public. For more information including photos, audio, and video please visit:
