"From Personal to Published" Day of Workshops at Oak Lawn Community High School
olchs.jpg
Oak Lawn Community High School won high marks locally and regionally in IL for its Group Interpretation theater project based on It's Kind of a Funny Story in 2010. It's my privilege to visit the school on Thursday, February 17th, 2011.

Starting at 8am and continuing throughout the day on Thursday, I will provide my "FROM PERSONAL TO PUBLISHED" workshop to sessions of about 18 students per session. This program is about the skills and business of professional writing and has been featured at the Queens Public Library in New York.

Thank you so much to Ms. Buys and all the students that made this event possible.

One reader suggested that I link pictures of Stuyvesant High School since I went there. Good idea.
MUSIC
Wormwhole (age 13) - "Pants In The Mail"
[updated 2-5-10: now see "Pants In the Mail" on YouTube!]

...In Teen Angst? Naaah..., I started a band called Wormwhole. People have emailed me asking for the Wormwhole demo, since in the book I said that first five people who contacted me about it would be allowed to buy it. Sadly, for years, Wormwhole was lost forever. We never really had a demo; we just had one tape that we recorded in my friend Ike's bedroom.

But then, one day, I was trying to make a mix tape on my stereo. I popped in an old tape to see if it was something I could tape over, and there was all this weird religious chanting music. Then, out of the blue, literally sent by divine intervention, was the Wormwhole tape! I don't know how it got into the middle of the tape, but my friend Marcus did a tape-to-mp3 and now, for free and forever, Wormwhole's two songs here. Above you're got "Pants In The Mail." "Lumber" is below.

"Love And Longing" at the Brooklyn Book Festival 2009
Brooklyn Book Fest 09-13-2009.jpg

From YouTube user chocochip16: "The brooklyn book festival took place at columbus park by brooklyn borough hall in NYC on Sunday September 13, 2009. At the festival there was a section for young adults. I attended and went to a author panel they had set up for younng adult readers. They had all day -long literary events scheduled for us teens and this video is one of the panels that includes three talented young adult writers, Aimee Friedman ( Sea Change), Anna Godbersen ( The luxe series), and Ned Vizzini ( Be more Chill). This panel's theme was Love and Longing, these author's novels revealed very different approaches to succeeding in love as they read and discuss their books. This panel discussion was amazing and i had a great time. I wanted to share with you all who are book lovers and enjoy reading young adult books like i do. Since some of you may not live in nyc and couldnt attend the event. I figured it would be great to show you a few clips that i took so you can enjoy and see some and hear from some great young adult writers. Hope you all enjoy!!!!"

Favorite Parts

Stephanie of The Philippines says: [I] think the best part [of Teen Angst? Naaah...]was trying to get to the school trip or do the thing where you get to play Christ....

EMMIE-O of PA says: My favorite part in 'Teen Angst? Naaah...' was when you had to be Jesus at church instead of going to Cancun. I feel for you. Once my mom was trying to force me to be Mary on Christmas Eve at church, and I sat down on the floor and screamed 'NOOOOOO!' while banging my fists on the ground. She decided that going through all that trouble to cast such a brat as Mary wasn't worth it. See? Ya gotta take a stand...The sad part was, though...I was 14 when this happened.

edwin of CA says: when you get home drunk

kelly of PA says: My favorite part in 'be more chill' would have to be the part where Jeremy goes on-line to look up 'squips' and he encounters a beanie baby site. Then his father interupts [as all parents do at crucial moments when you do not want to be bothered] and asks if he's gay. I seriously loved it. Then instead of getting back to looking for squip information he goes on a crazed search for expensive beanie babies he could possibly jack from his aunt. Oh man, I loved it!

Leigh of GA says: I couldn't decide. Though I must say, I loved the ending. Post-Squip was wonderful.
