SMITH Magazine and KGB Nonfiction host a 6 Word Memoir Slam based on the book Not Quite What I Was Planning: Six-Word Memoirs by Writers Famous and Obscure.
The book grew out of the response when SMITH Magazine—an online publication that celebrates storytelling—challenged their readers to write their six-word memoirs. Based on Hemingway’s legendary six-word story (“For sale: baby shoes, never worn”), this personal twist captured the public’s imagination. More than 15,000 entries poured in, from writers who had never been published before and big names like Stephen Colbert, Amy Sedaris, Dave Eggers, and Joyce Carol Oates.
Larry Smith, editor of SMITH Magazine, will introduce contributors including Gotham Chopra, Josh Kilmer-Purcell, Jean Chatzky, Mario Batali, Chuck Klosterman, Amy Sohn, Molly Jong-Fast, and Lawrence Weschler, [and me], who will read their memoirs and discuss the stories behind them.

One reader suggested that I link pictures of Stuyvesant High School since I went there. Good idea.

...In Teen Angst? Naaah..., I started a band called Wormwhole. People have emailed me asking for the Wormwhole demo, since in the book I said that first five people who contacted me about it would be allowed to buy it. Sadly, for years, Wormwhole was lost forever. We never really had a demo; we just had one tape that we recorded in my friend Ike's bedroom.
But then, one day, I was trying to make a mix tape on my stereo. I popped in an old tape to see if it was something I could tape over, and there was all this weird religious chanting music. Then, out of the blue, literally sent by divine intervention, was the Wormwhole tape! I don't know how it got into the middle of the tape, but my friend Marcus did a tape-to-mp3 and now, for free and forever, Wormwhole's two songs here. Above you're got "Pants In The Mail." "Lumber" is below.

says: I loved when you and Owen were out on the street with Aneas and his crew. That was so freaking hilarious how he would follow people for a few blocks and come back with like five dollars.
I also thought it was funny when you did the footnote about whatever a Rude Boy was. Did you ever figure that out?

says: So I bought "Be More Chill" and "It's Kind of a Funny Story" yesterday.... I read "BMC" all the way through sporadically from yesterday to today and I have to say that it really was an amazing book. Picking my favorite part is kinda hard.... but I'd have to go with when Jeremy is talking to his parents "pre-squip" about going to the Halloween dance.. I just thought alot of his conversations with them were hilarious. I also loved all the banter between him and the squip in his head...

says: Ok so Be More Chill was amazing! i bought it yesterday afternoon and finished it the same night! Being a girl, I found it amusing to be able to find out what boys think. I also liked it when the squip made the boy stop masturbating because girls would be able to tell.
